Blacked Out for January 18th - FUCK SOPA, PIPA & OPEN!
In case any of my readers are not aware of this, January 18th is a day when websites both large and small are joining in a protest against legislation being proposed in the United States Congress that could pretty much kill the World Wide Web as we know it. Some such as Google are merely changing their logo and posting a notice while others such as Wikipedia are going into a total blackout mode for the day.
Thanks to the fact that Tumblr has never provided a backup tool for those of us that do not use a Mac, blacking out a blog here is not an easy task. Thus, I am letting this post stand as my notice that I strongly oppose the bills known in short as SOPA, PIPA, and OPEN and am joining the “SOPA Blackout” by not doing any posting on January 18th.
I do not oppose these bills simply for my own self-interest as a porn blogger. If one takes the time to read them in full — and I have — it is clear they are filled with provisions that are blatantly unconstitutional. Making it all worse is that the implementation of these bills would end up causing the Internet to be even less safe than it is now by breaking down the DNS system that gets people to where they want to go on the Web.
This is an issue that, for once in a long time in this country, crosses party lines. For those that have chosen to listen to the facts instead of the 94 million dollars Hollywood has spent on lobbying for these bills that would make the Internet in the USA only the province of the major media conglomerates, both Democrats and Republicans are beginning to see the light.
However, they are only seeing the light because the howls against SOPA and PIPA (plus OPEN which is more the new kid on the block but still heavily flawed) have been going on since late last year. Tens of thousands of regular people have written, called, and e-mailed their Congressional representatives. It has worked well in helping to push some politicians away from supporting these proposed laws and slowed down what originally appeared to be an easy passage surely to be signed by President Obama.
It is now time for the big attention-getter to drum up publicity, put the spotlight on the Hollywood rats trying to turn the Internet into just another version of cable TV, and make the big push to kill these bills once and for all. To do that is going to take a few minutes of your time…yes, your time.
This is a time when e-mail won’t work and regular mail is too slow. You — yes, you — need to get on the phone to all three of your representatives in Congress — your House member and both of your Senators — and demand that they oppose SOPA, PIPA, and OPEN or face removal in their next run for election.
Yes, it is of the highest importance that each and every one of the American jack-offs and jill-offs reading this blog need to take their hands off of their goodies for a few minutes, get their shit together, and make a strong but professional call to Washington. It has already been proved that calls to legislators on this desperately important subject have made a difference. If even more people call, even the most hardened politician will listen because that many calls means a lot of votes.
So…get off your asses today and make three telephone calls. You don’t have to have a fancy speech ready. Just tell whoever on the staff answers that you want your representative to know that you strongly oppose SOPA, PIPA, and OPEN. It’s that easy. If you like the Internet, if you believe in due process, if you stand for the ideal of people being innocent until proven guilty, if you hate companies that buy off politicians in order to make themselves exempt from the laws the rest of us have to follow, if you believe in free speech…goddammit, take a few minutes and call.
Don’t know the number or even who your representatives are? No excuses, motherfuckers! Here’s the link to find out.
